Middlesbrough Town Hall

Middlesbrough Town Hall.

This competition to bring about a renaissance in the design and use of Middlesbrough Town Hall was won through a two stage competition run by Middlesbrough Council in Association with CABE and the Institute for Public Policy Research.

Our aim to create a place which puts people back into the centre of the community is achieved by reinventing the courtyard allowing the existing Victorian building to be revitalised, serving as the point from which all activities can be accessed. Activities which were historically accommodated within the town hall are returned.

The roof of the courtyard is a working roof, on one level it allows the environment of the courtyard and adjacent spaces to be controlled, on another level the structure provides a framework from which mobile, suspended elements such as banners, planting and lighting can be placed. The roof therefore allows the character and environment of the courtyard to be changed as required.

Budget: £19M
Competition won: 2003
