Pitcher & Piano, Newcastle
The Pitcher & Piano was commissioned in the summer of 1995 via
competitive interview by the Tyne and Wear Development Corporation
and Amec Developments. The initial brief was to design a building
shell that would be flexible enough to be fitted out by a number
of potential leisure users yet retain a strong architectural identity.
The language of the building grew out of a consideration of the
site. There are two very distinct sides. On the land side a solid
sandstone facade reflects the adjacent Quayside buildings while
on the riverside a fully glazed elevation maximises views of the
Tyne.
