Princesshay, Exeter

Bradwell's Court, Cambridge

Inspired by the magnificence of Bedford Circus, destroyed during World War II, we felt strongly about reinstating a public square on this site. The 1950s development, which replaced the beautiful Georgian terraces, made no reference to the Cathedral, and was regarded as a lost opportunity.

The Princesshay masterplan was developed with Wilkinson Eyre and Chapman Taylor, who were responsible for the areas north of our site. Our scheme consists of a series of mixed-use buildings, through which we have made the most of the Cathedral views from streets and rooftops, and have created pleasant and vibrant public spaces in between. A new glass pavilion is a focus on the square, providing views through its walls and roof to the Cathedral towers. Due to its low height, views from further away can also be enjoyed.

Budget: £22 million
Completion date: 2007

Awards:
BCSC's Supreme Gold Award (2007)
BCSC's Gold Award for In-Town Retail Scheme (2007)

Princesshay, Exeter

Bradwell's Court, Cambridge

Panter Hudspith have designed a number of new buildings and proposed refurbishment to existing buildings at the southern end of the Princesshay development site.

These buildings address a number of existing streets: Chapel Street adjoins Cathedral Close with a number of quality Medieval listed buildings. Bedford street is reinvented as a shopping street with the new Bedford Square at its heart and Princesshay has realigned the Cathedral views. Post Office Street has been transformed into a pedestrian mews adjacent to the city wall and flanked by Broadwalk Gardens. The scheme is a mix of retail and residential with a major new department store addressing the new Bedford Square.
