Camera Press, London
Camera Press, a photographic agency, needed a new headquarters
building incorporating offices, a photography library and the associated
Tom Blau Gallery. Panter Hudspith carried out a feasibility study
on an existing concrete frame warehouse building and were then retained
by Camera Press when they bought the building in 1992.
In response to a very limited budget (£38/sq ft) it was decided
to concentrate on articulating the building's inherent character.
The concrete frame was stripped back and cleaned. A system of untreated
iroko panels were then prefabricated and inserted into the frame
to complete the building enclosure. The building's architectural
quality arises from the straightforward expression of natural materials.
Budget: £400,000
Completion date: 1993
