Carmelite Street, York

Carmelite Street, York

Five teams were invited to put forward proposals in an architect/developer competition for a commercial development on land at Carmelite Street, York, in the ownership of the Joseph Rowntree Foundation. The Foundation (JRF) selected Panter Hudspith Architects, along with Complex Development Projects as their partner.

Some of the ideas put forward explored the social conditions of office work in the 21st century, and alternative ideas on building construction and services. The building proposal encapsulates low energy principles in its design and construction, and the developer has suggested initiatives to involve the new office staff in the life of the City through links to local community organisations.

A bespoke office building is now being developed and we are using these principles at every level of the design.

Budget: £5 million
Competition won: 2002
