1-5 Davygate, York

1-5 Davygate, York

"1-5 Davygate is an important development which successfully blends commercial aspirations with a sense of civic dignity" RIBA

1-5 Davygate is a 4,500 square metre retail development in the centre of York. The site is in the heart of a conservation area and surrounded by listed buildings. A previous building on the site provided ground floor retail space with offices above and a large carpark to the rear. The new scheme provides three floors of retail space across the entire footprint. The main limestone clad elevation follows the gentle curve of the street.

Panter Hudspith's involvement extended to the design of individual shopfronts ensuring a consistent treatment to the whole facade. The scheme won approval following the endorsement of both English Heritage and the Royal Fine Arts Commission. In the course of the project, the scheme was expanded to incorporate an adjacent 1851 Methodist Chapel.

2000 RIBA Award
2001 Civic Trust Commendation

Budget: £2.7 million
Completion date: 1999
